Throughout the years, many crossbreeds between the species have been developed. In the case of these crossbreeds, the middle name is dropped and the cultivar's name becomes the second name.
A special kind of crossbreeds between Cornus species are the crossbreeds of the rutgerensis group. This group of 6 crossbreeds between Cornus florida and Cornus kousa is the work of Elwin Orton from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. After having worked on this project for over 20 years, the following cultivars were selected: 'Aurora', 'Constellation', 'Celestial', 'Stardust', 'Stellar Pink' en 'Ruth Ellen'. All these cultivars form sterile flowers and bear no fruits or seeds
