As the name already suggests, Cornus kousa var. chinensis is not a man-made cultivar but a natural variety of kousa. It is found in central China, and reproduces by seeding. It differs so much from the regular kousa, than it deserves its own name. The var. chinensis has much larger leaves as well as larger spaces between pairs of leaves. The var. chinensis flowers somewhat less abundant than the Cornus kousa. Because the var. chinensis is reproduced by seeding, it may take as much as a few years before it blossoms first. The flowering intensity may also vary from year to year. The fruit and coloring of the leaves is as spectacular as kousa's. Caring for var. chinensis is the same as the regular kousa, and the var. chinensis is winterproof.
